Barn at Freeman's Tree Farm

The Freeman Tree Farm was established in 1960, with the purchase of the first parcel, and has expanded until 1998. The mission of the farm includes the promotion of "...the stewardship land ethic and tree farm concept to others."

The barn is typical of many properties in the Pennsylvania region. Most of Pennsylvania's forests were cleared for farming and the industrial revolution at the end of the 19th Century. The forests have recovered as farms and pastures were abandoned.

Mr. Freeman is one of 500,000 forest landowners in the state. As a recognized tree farmer, Mr. Freeman is very active on the farm. The Tree Farm System was established in 1941 to educate and recognize the commitment of private forest owners in the United States. Currently, there are 65,549 certified Tree Farms covering 26 million acres, approximately 60 percent of forestland, in 48 states. Pennsylvania has about 14,000 tree farmers. Mr. Freeman tree farm was honored as tree farmer of the year in 1998.
