Overview:

The Montreal Process was developed in 1994 in Geneva, Switzerland. The purpose was to establish criteria for the measurement of temporal and boreal forest sustainability throughout the world.

The 7 Criteria and 67 Indicators are not standards or goals. They are a means to measure the sustainability triangle of Production, Ecosystems, and Social Benefits over time and place. With this standardized set of criteria, national policies may be formulated to ensure a perpetual, healthy environment.

There are many excellent sources to learn more about sustainable forestry. The Montreal Home page provides an in depth experience.

Forest Certification is another forest sustainability program. This method tracks wood products from the finished product to the lumber mill to the forest of its origin.
